CO2 laser skin resurfacing is one of the most advanced treatments available for improving skin texture, reducing wrinkles, and addressing a range of skin concerns. At rtwskin, located in Tunbridge Wells (Kent) and conveniently close to London, we use the state-of-the-art DEKA Smartxide Dot® fractional CO2 laser to deliver outstanding results for our patients. This procedure is perfect for individuals seeking a non-surgical solution to rejuvenate their skin and achieve a more youthful appearance.

Resurfacing CO2 laser treatment works by creating microscopic channels in the skin using precise laser beams. These tiny channels trigger the body’s natural healing process, pushing out damaged skin and replacing it with the new, healthy tissue. This dual-action process makes CO2 laser resurfacing highly effective for addressing multiple concerns, including:

  • Deep wrinkles and fine lines, particularly around the eyes and mouth
  • Acne scars and other post-traumatic scarring
  • Sun damage and pigmentation irregularities
  • Blotchiness and enlarged pores
  • Skin laxity and texture concerns
  • Stretch marks

The laser creates controlled thermal damage, stimulating collagen production and remodeling the skin for a smoother, more youthful appearance, while promoting faster healing as only a fraction of the skin is treated at a time.

The treatment is particularly popular for the face, neck, and delicate areas such as the eyelids Madonna EyeLift and around the mouth to target upper lip wrinkles and perioral lines.

Madonna Eye Lift

The Madonna Eye Lift CO2 laser resurfacing procedure is a non-surgical blepharoplasty designed to rejuvenate the delicate skin around the eyes. Using advanced CO2 laser technology, the procedure targets fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin, stimulating collagen production and tightening the skin. This results in a lifted, smoother, and more youthful appearance. The treatment is particularly effective for addressing concerns like crow’s feet, skin laxity, under-eye bags, and drooping eyelids. With no scarring, a quick recovery time of 5-7 days, and no side effects typically associated with traditional eyelid surgery, the Madonna Eye Lift offers a cost-effective, non-invasive alternative to plastic surgery.

Benefits of CO2 fractional laser resurfacing treatment

One of the key benefits of CO2 laser resurfacing is its ability to deliver dramatic, long-term results with minimal discomfort. Some of the main advantages include:

  • Tightening loose skin and reducing wrinkles: immediate shrinkage of damaged skin gives a facelift-like effect.
  • Improving irregular skin texture: reduces pigmentation, pore size, and rough skin textures.
  • New collagen production: visible improvements in skin laxity continue for up to a year after the treatment.
  • Reducing scarring: effective for acne scars, stretch marks, and surgical or traumatic scars.
  • Targeting sun damage: removes age spots, sun spots, and pre-cancerous actinic keratosis.

At rtwskin, depending on your skin condition and the severity of your symptoms, we can recommend a preparatory treatment plan before your laser resurfacing procedure. Additionally, we offer a customised home skincare program to follow before and after your laser resurfacing CO2 treatment, designed to enhance results, accelerate healing, and maintain the benefits for years to come.

How the treatment works

During fractional CO2 laser resurfacing, the laser creates tiny channels in the skin that are finer than a human hair. These micro-injuries stimulate the body to repair itself by generating new collagen and pushing out damaged skin cells. This process renews the top layer of the skin (epidermis) and tightens the deeper layer (dermis).

The procedure is minimally uncomfortable, and recovery is much quicker than with traditional resurfacing treatments. We provide patients with a topical anesthetic to ensure a more comfortable treatment experience, minimising pain and stress. However, patients may feel a slight stinging sensation during the procedure. Once the treatment is complete and protective antibacterial cream has been applied to reduce the risk of infection, patients are free to drive home. The immediate aftereffect typically includes mild discomfort for up to an hour, similar to the sensation of severe sunburn.

Results from CO2 fractional resurfacing laser treatment  are visible immediately as the CO2 laser targets and evaporates water in the skin, causing it to contract. The skin tightening effect becomes more apparent once the skin peels away. Over the next few months, new collagen stimulates healthier, younger-looking skin, with continued improvement for up to six months as the skin becomes firmer  from collagen regeneration.

How many treatments are required?

The number of sessions needed for CO2 laser resurfacing depends on the severity of wrinkles, skin laxity,  scarring, or sun damage, as well as your individual goals. For many clients, just one session of CO2 laser fractional treatment delivers visible improvements. However, deeper wrinkles and scars may require a course of 3-5 treatments for optimal results.

At rtwskin, we customise each resurfacing laser CO2 treatment to suit your needs. Deeper treatments achieve more significant results but come with slightly longer recovery times, while more superficial treatments allow for quicker healing with a series of sessions.

Long-term results and maintenance

DEKA Smartxide Dot®  fractional CO2 laser resurfacing delivers energy in a scanning pattern, reducing heat buildup and allowing higher energy levels. This controlled application vaporises and peels the top layers of skin, ensuring quick recovery and noticeable improvements in skin quality. Generally, it offers a faster recovery than more aggressive procedures, while still delivering significant results.

The effects of fractional laser CO2 treatment are long-lasting, especially with proper aftercare. However, the longevity of your results depends on factors such as your aftercare, sun protection, general health, smoking, and lifestyle habits.

We recommend using a tailored skincare programme and high SPF sun protection to maintain your results. With proper care, the benefits of CO2 laser resurfacing can last for many years, making it one of the most reliable treatments for skin rejuvenation.

All laser procedures will require a test patch a minimum of 24 hours prior to treatment. This is a standard requirement for safety and insurance purposes.

You will see skin tightening and shrinking immediately after the treatment but the quality of the skin continues to improve over the coming months. Therefore optimum/final results of the treatment are most apparent around 3–6 months after the procedure. It must be noted that although you will see results after your first treatment, normally you will require a course of 3 – 5 treatments for optimal effect. Heavy Acne scarring may require more

CO2 Laser Resurfacing can be combined with other treatments although we cannot do other treatments in the same area(s) treated on the same day. We advise you to wait for full recovery of the skin. We may recommend Botox treatment 2 weeks prior to the laser treatment as studies have shown that this may enhance the effect on wrinkles caused by movement. We will then usually wait 2 weeks before we would offer dermal filler treatment if this is requested.

The treatment takes about an hour for a full face procedure and feels like a “pins and needles” sensation. Local anaesthetic cream will be applied to your skin an hour prior to the treatment and a strong stream of cold air (Zimmer cooler) will be directed on the area during the treatment to make it more comfortable. The discomfort ranges from mild to moderate.  Your complete procedure will take about 2 ½ hours in total.

During the first 24 hours after treatment, you may feel a sensation similar to that of severe sunburn. The healing process usually takes 3-14 days.  There will be a period of 4-6 weeks after that when your skin may continue to be slightly pink. During this period, your skin will become smoother and looks less blotchy. As the colour returns to normal, you will see a fewer lines, and tighter skin with a youthful glow.
