In simple terms Vitiligo is the selective destruction of active melanocytes (the cells that make you brown) in the skin and the inactive melanocytes in the outer root sheaths of hair follicles not being affected ; the cause is unknown, but is generally believed to be an autoimmune process and can often be hereditary or triggered by a stressful event.
