Our approach to Melasma treatments:

Step1. We advise you to book your initial Dermatology consultation that will include your skin examination, diagnosis and a personalised and effective treatment regime.  We usually advise to balance and stabilise your skin with our Obagi Nu-Derm system or arbutin, azelaic acid and hydroquinone based products.  Obagi Nu-Derm  is a unique system to treat and restore, pigmented and damaged skin and substantially improve the structure of the skin.  Obagi products penetrate deeply into the skin, repairing damage to the epidermal and dermal layers. It strengthens the skin’s cell functions, making the skin look younger and healthier.

To treat Melasma effectively, Dr. Zein Obagi recommends treatment over the entire affected area, not just the dark pigmented spots.

The Obagi system does not compare to any standard cosmetic skincare. It improves the skin dramatically by using high concentrations of prescription ingredients such as Hydroquinone and Tretinoin.  Depending on your personal treatment schedule (mild/normal/strong) your skin will show signs of redness, flaking, itchiness and skin sensitivity for the first six weeks. In addition, your skin will be more sensitive to the sun, so it is very important to use a minimum of SPF40 sun protection.

All these side-effects are temporary and will become more tolerable during the next six weeks. If you find them too aggravating, some adjustments to your treatment protocol may be made. Melasma often masks broken capillaries, so once the pigmentation is resolved, it is not uncommon to see capillaries where the pigmentation was once seen. Visible capillaries can be removed with one of our vascular lasers. A follow-up consultation is necessary to evaluate the result and adjust the treatment plan if needed.

Step2. Studies suggest that the improvements of Melasma can be enhanced by the removal of the superficial layers of the epidermis by chemical peels. Depending on the type of your Melasma and skin type, we will advise you on the chemical peel and/or keratolytic topical creams to get the best possible result.

Step 3. Once your skin is prepared and melanocytes are stabilised we can offer you our unique and gentle laser pigmentation removal procedure developed by Dr Maurice Ho (Hong Kong), a specialist in pigmentation for Asian and dark skin types who personally shared his experience with one of our doctors. Since then we have successfully treated many Melasma sufferers with dark skin. You will be advised on the number and frequency of treatments recommended for optimal results.

Step 4. A maintenance programme is designed to prevent Melasma reoccurrence and usually includes topical creams and sun protection.

Our Skin Experts : During a consultation our trained experts will discuss with you the best and most cost effective method of treatment(s) by assessing the severity of pigmentation, your skin type and the desired results. Most skin hyperpigmentation conditions can be corrected or minimized if treated properly, with the right treatment and product. For more severe cases please book your appointment to see our consultant dermatologist or our specially trained in dermatology doctor who can manage difficult cases and prescribe you bespoke treatment plan which could include prescription topical medication.

All laser procedures will require a test patch a minimum of 24 hours prior to treatment. This is a standard requirement for safety and insurance purposes.

We will need to take a look at the pigmentation in order to tailor a treatment plan to your needs. Usually only one or two laser procedures will be required, however darker, deeper pigmentation may need more. Once treated the age spots will not return, but we do advise to use a sun cream in future! Prescription products may of course require more time for the lightening effect to give results.

Take a look at our price list and you’ll get an idea of the range. Don’t forget you can join our loyalty scheme and save money on regular treatments, so that’s a lovely bonus. We will be open and honest about prices when we meet for a chat at the very first consultation, so that you can make your decision in your own time. And the consultation is free. So drop us a line or give us a call to come in for a chat.

Before the procedure is done, your doctor will apply a topical numbing cream to the eyelids and protect the eye area with an eye shield. Most people experience little discomfort during and after the procedure. At the most, you may feel a little tingling. While some redness and puffiness should be expected for a day or two afterward, you can apply makeup after the procedure to conceal it and we’d recommend a mineral-based make up that allows your skin to breathe. Just ask at reception. We recommend you use sun screen and hydrate your skin with moisturiser.
