Pigmentation removal for darker skin tones
By Dr Nina Sheffield, MD, BSc
Uneven pigmentation is more difficult to treat in darker skin tones. That’s why our experts have had specialist training in Hong Kong, to understand the complexities of darker skin and the most effective ways of producing great results to even out skin colour.
Dark skin is the most challenging when it comes to pigmentation issues, simply because it has more pigmentation in it, to begin with. The first challenge with very dark skin is in identifying where there is excessive pigmentation and where the skin is the normal colour. The second challenge is in identifying appropriate treatments.
Hyperpigmentation
I did my laser training, along with our managing director John Sheffield, in Hong Kong as the Asian experts know a lot more about how to treat darker skin. In general, lasers can’t be used on dark skin, so we generally use topical creams. We use professional products that produce fantastic results in evening out hyperpigmentation such as freckles, age spots and melasma.
One of the common problems associated with dark skin is postinflammatory pigmentation or brown acne scars. Our topical creams are also highly successful at reducing the impact of acne scarring to leave you with more even skin tone.
Improving vitiligo
One of the exceptions to the no-laser rule for darker skin is in the treatment of vitiligo, in which the pigmentation cells of the skin are destroyed in certain areas, leading to patchy colouration. Traditional treatments include topical creams, which are often messy and can cause acne, and whole-body UVB treatments, which can have serious side effects, including skin cancer, atrophy and striae.
Our cutting-edge technology avoids these side effects. We use an Excimer Laser to give a targeted beam of UVB light only to the affected area to stimulate the pigmentation to repair itself, starting at the hair follicles and then travelling out into the unpigmented skin. This gives quicker, safer results.
Darker skin tones present more of a challenge, but that doesn’t mean you have to live with your pigmentation issues. With the right expertise, you can expect fantastic results.
