Why choose laser hair removal?

Choosing the Right Laser for Your Skin and Hair

Laser hair removal targets pigmented hair follicles to reduce future growth. The wavelength and treatment settings are selected according to your skin tone, hair colour, hair thickness and treatment area.
At rtwskin, Alexandrite and Nd:YAG laser technologies are selected according to skin tone, hair characteristics and the treatment area:
Alexandrite laser: commonly selected for suitable lighter skin tones with dark, pigmented hair. Treatment settings are adapted according to the area, hair thickness and individual skin response.
Nd:YAG laser: may be selected for darker skin tones because its wavelength can target pigmented hair at a greater depth. Suitability, settings and expected results are confirmed through skin assessment and patch testing.

Alexandrite and Nd:YAG Laser Hair Removal

Our medical-grade laser platforms include Lumenis Stellar M22, DEKA Motus AX and Fotona Avalanche LXP. Integrated cooling and individually selected settings are used to support treatment comfort and protect the skin during each session.

How Laser Hair Removal Works

Laser hair removal works by delivering controlled light energy into the hair follicle. The pigment in the hair absorbs this energy, which damages the follicle and reduces its ability to regrow hair.

Hair grows in cycles, so multiple sessions are required to effectively target active growth phases.

Treatment Areas

Where can laser hair removal be used?

Laser hair removal can be performed on most areas of the body, including:

Face (upper lip, chin, jawline)
Underarms
Bikini line and intimate areas, including Brazilian-style hair removal where suitable
Legs
Arms
Back and chest (for men)

Each area requires a tailored approach depending on hair thickness and skin type.

Treatment Schedule & Aftercare

How many sessions of laser hair removal are required?

Most patients begin with a course of 6–8 treatments. Some may require additional sessions depending on hair thickness and colour, skin type, hormonal factors, the treatment area and individual response.

Maintenance sessions may be recommended where new growth develops over time. Your treatment schedule will be confirmed following consultation and patch testing.

What Should I Expect After My Treatment?

After your treatment, you may experience some redness in the skin, which can last from a few minutes up to 24 hours. Occasionally, the treated area may feel itchy for a few hours. It is normal for the treated hair to shed between sessions. We advise against waxing or plucking these hairs, as it can interfere with the treatment process.

Following the recommended aftercare can help support skin recovery and reduce avoidable irritation between treatments.

Laser and IPL

What Is the Difference Between Laser Hair Removal and IPL?

Laser hair removal uses a specific wavelength selected according to the patient’s skin tone and hair type. IPL uses a broader spectrum of light rather than a single laser wavelength.

At rtwskin, Alexandrite and Nd:YAG laser technologies allow the wavelength and treatment settings to be adapted to the individual patient. Suitability is confirmed during consultation and patch testing.

Consultation & Test Patch

Consultations, test patches, and related treatments

At rtwskin, we offer a free consultation and patch test before treatment. Your practitioner will assess your skin tone, hair type, treatment area and relevant medical history, explain the expected course and use the patch test to evaluate skin response.

Laser treatment generally works best on dark, pigmented hair. Very light blonde, grey, white and some red hair may not respond sufficiently to laser treatment. In these cases, electrolysis may be a more appropriate option.

Laser Hair Removal: Suitability & Long-Term Results

Who is suitable for laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal at rtwskin is suitable for most skin types and for treating unwanted hair across a wide range of areas, including the face, underarms, legs, and bikini line. The treatment is most effective on darker hair, as the laser targets pigment within the hair follicle. However, modern medical-grade laser systems allow us to safely treat a broader range of skin tones with tailored settings.

Laser hair removal is particularly beneficial for patients who experience frequent shaving irritation, ingrown hairs, or rapid hair regrowth. Results can vary depending on hair colour, skin type, treatment area and hormonal influences. Conditions such as PCOS can contribute to ongoing hair growth, so some patients may require additional or maintenance sessions.

A consultation at rtwskin is essential to assess your skin and hair type, discuss your goals, and determine the most appropriate and safe treatment plan for you.

Your first laser hair removal session can take place 24 after your patch test, provided the skin has responded normally.

Preparation & Safety Guidelines

When Should Laser Hair Removal Be Postponed?

Laser hair removal may need to be postponed if the treatment area is sunburnt, actively irritated or inflamed, or if recent tanning or certain medicines could increase the risk of a skin reaction.
Pregnancy, changes in medication and active skin conditions should also be discussed before treatment. Suitability is assessed individually during consultation and, where necessary, before each session.

How to Prepare for Laser Hair Removal

Before your appointment, follow the preparation advice provided during your consultation and patch test. In general:

Shave the treatment area as advised before your appointment.
Avoid waxing, plucking or epilating before and during your treatment course.
Avoid tanning and self-tan before treatment and tell us about any recent sun exposure.
Let your practitioner know about any medicines or skincare products you are using.
Treatment may need to be postponed if the skin is sunburnt, irritated or inflamed.

Specific preparation advice will be confirmed during your consultation.

Why choose laser hair removal over waxing or shaving?

Unlike temporary hair removal methods, laser treatments target the hair follicle directly.

Laser hair removal may:

- Reduce hair growth over time
- Help reduce recurring ingrown hairs
- Keep the skin smoother for longer
- Reduce the need for frequent shaving or waxing

What to expect after laser hair removal at rtwskin

After your laser hair removal treatment at rtwskin, the skin may appear slightly red or sensitive, similar to mild sun exposure. This typically settles within a few hours, although in some cases redness can last up to 24 hours.

Some patients may also experience mild itchiness in the treated area shortly after the procedure — this is a normal part of the skin’s response. Treated hairs will gradually shed over the following days and weeks. This shedding is an expected part of the post-treatment process.

For optimal results and to protect your skin, our clinicians recommend:

Avoid waxing or plucking between sessions, as this can interfere with the treatment cycle
Allow treated hairs to shed naturally without pulling them out
Avoid excessive heat exposure (such as hot showers, saunas, or steam rooms) for 24–48 hours
Use daily sun protection (SPF 30–50) on treated areas, especially exposed skin
Keep the skin clean and avoid irritation in the first 24 hours

Most patients can return to normal daily activities immediately after treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does laser hair removal hurt?

Most patients describe the sensation as mild and tolerable, often compared to a light snapping feeling.

How long does laser hair removal last?

Results can last for months or years, with occasional maintenance treatments.

Can laser hair removal treat all areas?

Yes, most areas of the body can be treated safely.

Is laser hair removal safe for all skin types?

Modern systems allow treatment across a wide range of skin types when performed correctly.

How many sessions are needed?

Typically 6–8 sessions are required for optimal results.

Can laser hair removal treat ingrown hairs?

Yes — at rtwskin, laser hair removal is an effective way to treat and prevent ingrown hairs by targeting the hair follicle and stopping hairs from growing back into the skin. It is often recommended for areas prone to irritation, such as the bikini line, face, and neck.

For persistent cases, we may also combine treatment with our Ingrown Hair Removal approach.

Is laser hair removal suitable for men?

Yes, it is commonly used for areas such as the back, chest and neck.

What is the process of laser hair removal?

During treatment, the laser delivers controlled light pulses into the hair follicles. The pigment absorbs the light, damaging the follicle and reducing future growth. Built-in cooling ensures the surrounding skin is protected throughout the process

Are there any side effects to laser hair removal?

Mild redness, swelling, or sensitivity in the treated area can occur and typically resolves within a few hours to a few days. Serious side effects are rare when the procedure is performed by a qualified professional.

Is laser hair removal permanent?

Laser hair removal provides long-lasting hair reduction but is not always considered 100% permanent. Multiple sessions are needed to target hair follicles in different growth phases, and occasional maintenance may be required.

Is laser hair removal safe for darker skin tones?

Advances in laser technology, such as ND:YAG lasers, make it possible to safely treat darker skin tones without causing pigmentation changes. Lighter skin tones may be treated with Alexandrite lasers. A patch test ensures safety and suitability.

How long after a patch test can I have laser hair removal?

Your first treatment can take place 24 after your patch test, provided the skin has responded normally. Your practitioner will confirm the timing during your consultation.

When should laser hair removal be postponed?

Treatment may need to be postponed if the skin is sunburnt, irritated or inflamed, following recent tanning, or where medication or another health factor may affect suitability. Please tell your practitioner about any changes before your appointment.
