How we help improve the appearance of mild acne scars
By Dr Fatima Ahmed
Scarring is, unfortunately, a common side effect of acne, with 95% [source] of it occurring on the face. Fortunately, we have a range of treatments that can help even out the texture and colour of your skin.
Prevention is better than cure, and reducing the infection and inflammation that create the spots which cause scarring is the most important part of the treatment of acne scars. But if you already have mild scarring, we can use any of the following treatments – or a combination of them – to improve the texture, colour and appearance of your skin.
Chemical peels
These stimulate the production of collagen and elastin to improve the skin’s appearance. Peels can work to different depths, so we choose the right one; with superficial scarring, we use one that only works on the top layers of the skin to improve the depth of the scar.
Derma rolling
This is a skin needling device, which punctures the top layer of the skin to promote the natural healing process, which in turn stimulates the production of collagen and elastin to improve the texture. The skin normally takes 21 to 28 days to renew – derma rolling expedites this. Dermaroller significantly improves the appearance of lines and wrinkles on the face, neck and décolletage, sun damaged and ageing skin, acne & post-traumatic scars, stretch marks.
Platelet Rich Plasma Injections
A treatment with no side effects, as we treat you with your own blood! A small amount is taken from your arm and then spun in a centrifuge to separate the different payers; the platelet-rich plasma layer is then reinjected into the scars to promote healing and the stimulation of elastin and collagen. One academic study [source] found derma rolling combined with PRP to be effective in treating boxcar and rolling scars, reducing hyperpigmentation and in improving the firmness and smoothness of the skin.
We offer free initial consultations to assess which treatments might be most appropriate to improve your skin.
