Co2 Laser Resurfacing: The art of achieving beautiful skin.
By Emily Ruse, Deputy Registered Manager
Imagine you could take all of your skin concerns – pigmentation, sun damage, acne scars, dullness, fine lines and wrinkles – and peel them all away to reveal a new layer of fresh, glowy, healthy skin. Well, that’s essentially what Co2 Laser Resurfacing does. Which is why the on-the-rise treatment has become an increasingly popular solution for many people who are serious about blasting away their imperfections for good.
Most patients are on the search for a resurfacing treatment for one of three reasons: sun damage, wrinkles and acne scarring. People most commonly have their whole face treated with the laser, but the neck, décolletage, hands and arms are also popular areas to be treated.
Textured acne scars, in particular, are treated more effectively with lasers than any topical treatment. Being able to target the deeper layers within the skin allows you to really break up the scar tissue that’s clouding the textural difference in ways that cream just wouldn’t be successful.
The DEKA SmartXide Dot/RF Co2 Laser is safe and effective for everyone and all skin types. As well as fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, pigmentation, enlarged pores and scars, it also improves tightness and texture on the face, neck, chest, arms and hands. The energy from the laser creates tiny “columns of thermal destruction” in the skin which stimulates the growth of new, healthy skin cells to replace old, damaged cells. The real magic happens during the repair process – the skin turnover and collagen production is actually just the body’s natural healing process accelerated. The procedure generates an entirely new layer of epidermal tissue (the top layer of skin) as well as tightening the dermal tissue (the deeper layers of the skin). Instead of completely destroying the surface of the skin, like the old-style laser therapy, it’s pixelated-type destruction. And the result of poking multiple hot, tiny holes in your skin? Think real life Instagram filter.
The DEKA SmartXide Dot Co2 Laser penetrates slightly deeper and has a unique way of shrinking collagen than a Fraxer Laser. Therefore, it generally gives a better result for deeper wrinkles, acne scars, upper lip lines and creepiness around the eyes. The Co2 is best for patients in their 40s to 70s with moderate to deep wrinkles, sun damage or with moderate to severe acne scarring. The majority of patients will notice a significant improvement in skin tone after just one treatment. Because SmartXide Dot laser treatment stimulates collagen production, results will continue to develop for 3-6 months post-treatment.
The treatment takes about an hour for a full-face procedure and feels similar to that of a pins and needles sensation. Local anaesthetic cream will be applied to your skin an hour prior to the treatment and during treatment, strong steam of cool area will be directed to the area to make it more comfortable. During the first 24 hours post-treatment, you may feel a sensation similar to that of severe sunburn but over the following weeks, the skin will gradually become smoother and as the colour begins to return to normal, lines, wrinkles and pigmentation will fade away leaving the area tighter with a youthful glow.
The results of Co2 Laser treatment is long-term and, with proper sun protection and home care regime, and continue to improve for many years.
