Ear Syringing in Tunbridge Wells

It could be due to a build-up of a natural wax called Cerumen (or more commonly called- earwax). Acting as a defence mechanism for the ear, the wax can unwillingly make your sense of hearing dulled. This is due to the process by which the wax clears all debris out of the ear. Starting at the outer third of the ear canal and making its way outwards, the wax utilises its unique properties of being a natural lubricant, adhesive and anti-bacterial to defend the sensitive parts of the ear.

An earwax build-up is likely to be caused by the wax being pushed into the ear canal during cleaning with cotton buds. Although recognised by loss of hearing, there are other symptoms, which include coughing, itching, ringing and sometimes pain.

An initial assessment is made of each individual prior to treatment to ensure that it is appropriate for ear irrigation to be carried out.

2. Next, the ear canal is cleaned with a high-pressure water compressor to soften the earwax and remove build-up.

3. Finally, the practitioner uses ear pick tools to clean the ear canal and remove fragments of leftover earwax.

PLEASE NOTE irrigation should not be carried out if:

* Previously experienced complications following this procedure in the past

* There is a history of a middle ear infection in the last 6 weeks

* Undergone any ear surgery in the last 18 months (grommets that have extruded at least 18 months previously and documented that TM is intact)

* Patient has a perforation

* History of mucous discharge in the last 12 months

* Evidence of otitis externa with pain and tenderness of the pinna.

This list is not exhaustive, and the nurse will use her own judgement for each individual.

You can check your hearing on the Action on Hearing Loss website:

Instil two drops of Olive Oil drops into each ear (available to buy at most chemists). Keep the head on the side for 10 minutes or place soaked cotton wool with olive oil into the ear canal.

Repeat this twice a day for 7-14 days prior irrigation.

Quick and painless, ear syringing is a gentle irrigation treatment with a water jet system (propulse) to remove built-up wax carried out by our qualified RGN nurse.
